Dear Friends
|
 |
During 2006 more Anglos visited our Pueblos than ever before. Nearly 2,000 came to Spain to enrich and enhance the learning of English for an equal number of grateful Spanish professionals. We've heard about your life-changing experiences and about the wonderful bonds and friendships you've formed. We can't imagine another place where you could meet a group of individuals so diverse, yet with so much in common. You are united not only through your language, but through your interest in other cultures, your spirit of adventure, your dedication, your enthusiasm, your patience and last but not least - your ability to chatter incessantly!
The Anglo Department invite you to read on for the lowdown on what's new in our community and hear about some of the opportunitites open to you in 2007. Before we go any further we have a message from Juan Carlos, General Manager of Pueblo Ingles.
"I sincerely thank you for all of your enthusiasm and dedication. After Pueblo Ingles' busiest year ever, it is your positive energy that drives us forward into our sixth year with pride, focus and commitment. We really hope that you will continue to accompany us on this incredible journey. Muchísimas gracias a todos!" |

| Talking Italian |
|
Italy program dates are now available but conditions apply to those who would like to attend. You must be a veteran of our programs in Spain and we think that it's only fair that veterans who haven't been to the Italian program before get first opportunity. With only 15 spots available per program, the selection process will take a couple of weeks to create the most diverse groups possible, so we kindly ask that you are patient with us!

| Costa Ingles |
We are very excited to announce a new pueblo in our portfolio which is in the picturesque village of Pals, Costa Brava. Opening with two pilot programs this year in this exlusive venue means that spaces are very limited but also that it will populated by invitation only. Dates of all of our programs can be found here.

| Webbed Up |
|
We launched a snazzy new website in December which is an even better representation of what Pueblo Ingles is all about and what our beautiful pueblos look like. Thanks to all the lovely smiley faces of past Anglos that are featured on some of our pages, our website is now more attractive than ever! Due to the simpler navigation, visitors can inform themselves in style! However, we did experience some teething problems in the Personal Program Pages where you can do such things as apply, request a date and enter your travel details. As far as we know all of these kinks have been ironed out now but any old favourites that you have saved in Internet Explorer with Vaughanvillage in the address will be defunct. Please erase all of these links in your favourites and navigate to your desired page through our new website by going to www.puebloingles.com and then clicking on the “Are you a native English speaker?” button.
The link to the Teens website for the moment can be found here but we will be launching a new website very soon that you can link to from the Anglos home page. We still have vacancies for the Teen programs, so if you know any teenagers our would like materials to present them, please get in touch! |

| AngLounge Around |
|
We enjoy welcoming visitors at our office before or after the Pueblo Ingles experience. To make you feel even more at home we have inaugurated the "Anglounge". The Anglounge has been adorned with all the gifts and postcards you sent us and a computer that you can use to catch up on your emails or search for information on your travels. We also have an English bookshelf, which will come in handy for those avid readers out there. Any books you are finished with and don't want to pack in your suitcase would be appreciated and if there is something on the shelves that takes your fancy then you can help yourself! Any postcards or momentos from your hometown will be displayed with pride!

| Radio Ga Ga |
|
Pueblo Ingles has hit the airwaves with two daily shows going out across Madrid on radio Ondavoz and across the world via their website. The shows, delivered in English with some Spanish guidance, represent a great learning opportunity for Madrileños. There is a morning show between 7:30 and 9:30 and a half hour evening show for children and families starting at 8:00. They deliver rich and diverse English language content through entertaining and engaging programs.
The morning show combines traditional style lessons with dynamic and original English learning formats such as as interviews, ‘weird news', ‘prank calls' and ‘topic of the day'. The children's evening programme is just as varied and fun with singing, character acting and role-plays being regular features.
Our hosts, Sandra and Colby, have discovered a natural talent for radio presenting and their effortless rapport makes for a silky, smooth broadcast that brightens up even the dullest mornings! |

| Take a Butchers' |
|
You may be native and you may be well informed about your own language, however, we'll bet that the following paragraph containing Cockney Ryhming Slang will have your knickers in twist!
You don't need too much bread n' honey for a week at Pueblo Inglés. You just pay the Condoleeza of your bat and wicket to and from Madrid and one night's Duke of Kent before the program begins. After that we sort out all your Duke, the Uncle Gus to and from your program, and all of your in the nude. You´ll need a bit of fluffy bunny for Tiddly Winks between meals and you might want a bit in the evening for some Britney Spears or another glass of Calvin from the near and far. Not much though.
Clear?............ Bobby Moore?
Hopefully you're totally didgeridooed up about the program but if you're wondering how much Captain Kirk is involved, whether you should bring your auntie ella or how much bo-peep you're going to get, why not check out our wind and kite at www.puebloingles.com . Remember to log in and check out the program information page. If you've had a butchers at the whole thing and still have an unanswered question then you can always holy grail us at anglos@puebloingles.com
We do have one important message that you really should remember. At Pueblo Ingles people come as Glasgow Rangers and leave as dinner plates. Spanish waiter!

| Things to see and do in Madrid |
|
Classic Renaissance Art in Madrid
From the 13th of January to the 13th May, Madrid's Prado museum (one of the world's best) will be home to a stunning monographic exhibition of the last great renaissance painter Jacopo Tintoretto (the first since 1937). Major attractions include two of his religious masterpieces (The Last Supper and The Maundy) as well as mythological compositions and examples of his work as a portrait artist. Tintoretto is described as ‘the most terrible brain to ever work with painting'. Check it out to see if his work lives up to its reputation.
Las Fallas de Valencia
From the 13th to the 19th March Valencia becomes Spain's centre of attention as it hosts the explosive Fallas festival. Fallas are giant models made each year out of wood, papier mache and wax, often with political and social connotations. They are burnt on the 19th March in an organised festival of fire, fireworks and coordinated mayhem.
Easter celebrations, Semana Santa
Over the Easter period many areas of Spain stage magnificent spectacles and celebrations filled with colour, spirit and soul. Seville in the Andalusia region is renowned for having some of the most exceptional festivities, however, the other major cities offer a variety of events to rival the orange city.

| Ten Things you didn't know about Maria |
|
Since you tell us so much about you it's only fair that we divulge some tidbits about us! Continuing with our regular feature of Ten things you didn't know about......let us introduce Maria Goyanes, Operations Manager.
By February 2007 Maria will have worked nearly 1400 days as fourth in command at the helm of Pueblo Ingles ship.
-
Her hobbies include music, movies, modern art & architecture and she also practices a variety of sports…….. sporadically!
-
She's tri-lingual in the languages of Spanish, English and French - although she is very shy speaking French because she's worried her French accent sounds a bit prissy!
-
Maria was responsible for coordinating and liasing with over 3,000 Anglos between 2003 to 2006. Her multitasking capabilities are to be marvelled at!
-
Being a keen traveller she has been to Berlin, Brussels, Prague, Budapest, Paris, Malaga, Menorca, Cadiz, Valencia, Cordoba and Segovia in the past year alone.
-
She's currently reading Breakfast at Tiffany's because she likes to compare books with their motion picture equivalents. ”I knew Truman Capote was famous for something!”, she giggles.
-
She would love to be a rock star in her next life, but makes do with dancing ‘til her feet are blistered at all the summer music festivals.
-
Maria has a quiet, trance-like approach to her work and her office buddies often jump out of their seats when she snaps out of it and switches to a bubblier version!
-
She has a degree in Business and HR and minoring in Communications but her true passion is interior design. This manifests itself every once in a while when the office is mysteriously rearranged.
-
Despite the office staff's bewilderment at the amount of skirts in Maria's collection, she insists that she doesn't actually own that many. But we'd bet that she could easily go two months straight without repeating a single one!

| Competition Winners
|
|
We asked you all out there to send us a poem that captures the specialness of Pueblo Ingles and a picture with a witty caption from one of your programs. Thank you very much to all the contributors, we had a bundle of laughs and some ooohs and ahhhhs in the office! We are delighted to announce that the winners of the shiny new MP3 players are; Sandra Pettigrew from Winnipeg, Canada and Joe Weisseman from Leeds, UK.
Sandra, who came to Valdelavilla in October, has signed up for another program which we are delighted about because we love Anglos that can laugh at themselves (Sandra is in the middle of the photo to the right)! Joe has participated in our Teen Pueblo Ingles three times and, as you can see below, captures it really well with this poem. |

Maria: "Will she ever stop talking...."
Simon: "I think I found her best angle!!" |
Imagine a trip to Madrid in Spain
A place where you rarely see the rain
I arrived in the country by plane and train
And hope to return there again and again
From Madrid we ventured to Salamanca
With the loveable Colby and Sandra Handler
For her expertise I can only thank her
To return to Anglo town, for this I hanker
There's also the social time, a real highlight
And playing games and singing songs in the twilight
And when the night falls, we see nature's skylight
As the stars over Spain shine as bright as a nightlight
The best part of the trip was as ever the weather
And whether the camp would be as fun as ever
But Anglo town rocked and did not disappoint
A week in a hotel free, but that's not the point
|
As I was teaching these youngsters to speak my language
At first on their faces I saw great anguish
Why must we speak in English not Spanish?
But by the end of the week their doubts sure did vanish
From this adventure I made some friends from the States
And people in Ireland and others from Great
Britain and Italy and even some Aussies
Who told me some rather rude jokes ‘bout Pommies
So please come to Spain and to Anglo town
Your mastery of English is needed right now
You don't need to teach or have any know-how
Just to have this adventure, and wonder about...
...your language |
